Giggs Says Ajax Draw Saved United From Blues

Ryan Giggs reckons drawing Ajax saved Manchester United from suffering from the Europa League blues.

The Reds were embarrassed at being knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage having been made favourites to land a place in the last 16.

That left them being dumped into Europe’s second category cup and enduring the indignity of playing on Thursday nights.

But Welsh star Giggs claims the clouds hanging over United were lifted when they were handed a tie with Dutch side Ajax.

Giggs said: ``Everyone was obviously down after not qualifying in the Champions League but we got a little boost with the draw because we realised it’s still a big tournament and you’ve still got to play good football against good teams.

`They’ve won the European Cup four times so they’ve got enormous pedigree. They’ve got a great stadium that we’ve played at a couple of times although we’ve not come across them on our travels in Europe.’’

Giggs claims United are looking at the competition as a chance to redeem themselves after their shock early exit from the Champions League.

He added: ``It is an opportunity to show the lessons we’ve learned in Europe. We know in Europe it is always a challenge and you’ve always got to perform home and away.

``Generally our form is good in Europe. Obviously we had a disappointing campaign this year, but this is a new challenge. We’ve not won the competition before, so we want to win it.’’
