Preston are close to signing former Sheffield United keeper Steve Simonsen.

Deepdale boss Graham Westley wants Simonsen, 33, to put pressure on current number one Thorsten Stuckmann.

Simonsen is a free agent having quit the Blades as part of their cost cutting strategy following their failure to win promotion to the Championship.

Westley has been looking to recruit a new keeper ever since Richard Wright ripped up his contract just a week after arriving at Deepdale.

Wright headed home to his family in the south after admitting he was finding it impossible to cope without them.
