Shinji Kawaga Given Paul Scholes' Role As Net Buster

Shinji KawagaShinji Kawaga has been given the job of taking over from Paul Scholes as Manchester United's midfield goal machine.

The Reds have lacked real firepower from the middle of the park ever since Scholes' hit his early thirties.

None of United's NINE midfielders managed to hit double figures last term.

And Ferguson is looking to the Japanese star to sort out the problem.

The Scot acknowledges it was his team's failure to rack up plenty of goals that ultimately cost them the title last term.

Kawaga arrives at Old Trafford with a reputation for finding the net.

He scored 12 goals for previous club Borussia Dortmund two seasons ago and topped that with 17 last term.

It was that kind of return that caught Ferguson's eye.

And Kawaga popped up with his first Reds goal in the 3-2 win over Fulham to prove his Scottish boss right in thinking he knows where the goal is.

Ferguson said: "We have been low on goals from midfield in recent seasons.

"There was a time when Bryan Robson would give you a dozen goals coming through the centre of the park and Paul Scholes in his hey-day was good for ten or so.

"Lately we have not seen that kind of tally.

"I believe Kagawa will put that right which, with the addition of Robin van Persie, to the team should ensure we don't lose any more titles on goal difference."
