Martin Petrov Gives Jimmy Phillips' Bolton Dreams A Boost

Martin Petrov
Martin Petrov completed a stunning comeback win for managerless Bolton with a brilliant late winner.

Steven Davies had put the Bristol City two goals ahead and dreaming of a rare away win.

But Bolton fought back with strikes from Chris Eagles and Jay Spearing bringing them level before Petrov's clincher in this 3-2 victory

The dramatic win puts caretaker boss Jimmy Phillips in with a chance of getting the Trotters on a full-time basis.

But he must have thought he'd blown his chance when his side shipped a third minute opener.

Bristol City cleverly worked a corner for Stephen Pearson to deliver a teasing cross.

The ball may have been dropping behind Davies, but the midfielder shaped his body perfectly to hook a brilliant volley past Adam Bogdan.

And 18 minutes later Davies was gifted a chance to add a second as City won a penalty.

Tim Ream's reckless sliding tackle caught Martyn Woolford as he attempted to collect Albert Adomah's deflected shot.

Ref Mark Brown ignored Bolton's furious protests and Davies kept his cool to send Bodgan the wrong way.

The Robins were now convinced a rare win on the road was on the cards. That was until a bit of magic from Eagles got the Trotters back in the game.

His clever footwork brought a clumsy challenge by Louis Carey on edge of box and the winger insisted on taking the free-kick himself.

And no wonder. Poor Tom Heaton barely saw the ball as it fizzed under the wall and smacked into the corner of his net.

Now Bolton were surging forward and demanding a penalty of their own when Cole Skuse clearly held Benik Afobe back in the box. Ref Brown was having none of it.

The nerves were kicking in at the back for the Robins and Heaton was needed to superbly block Afobe's point blank shot.

The goal was coming though, the only surprise was the scorer.

When Kevin Davies threaded the ball through the Robins defence it was tigerish midfielder Spearing who raced through and clipped his shot home.

The visitors defence was caught square again as Bolton grabbed a thrilling winner.

Sub Chung-Young Lee and Eagles combined to send Petrov running through to guide the ball past Heaton.
