Charlie Adam Is As Good As Berbatov - says Tony Pulis

Stoke manager Tony PulisStoke boss Tony Pulis is not upset about missing out on Dimitar Berbatov in the summer - because he is convinced Charlie Adam is just as good.

Pulis failed to land Berbatov in the summer, when the striker
left Manchester United for Fulham.

But his disappointment quickly evaporated when he snapped up Adam for a bargain £5m from Liverpool.

And now he’s backing Adam to have the kind influence on his team he was hoping Berbatov would exert.

Pulis said: “Berbatov’s a great player, an outstanding player. I think he was out of reach for us though.

“Now, we’re looking at Charlie and believe he has the ability to do what Berbatov has done.

“Charlie can see a pass and has the ability to open the door. He has looked more like it in the last couple of weeks and he has the ability.

“He scored 15 goals at Blackpool and we want him to get 10-15 goals.”

Adam scored his first, and only, goal for Stoke in the 1-0 defeat of QPR two weeks ago.

Berbatov, who hit the net 22 times for Manchester United two seasons ago, currently has netted five for Fulham.

That’s the same number as Stoke striker Peter Crouch, who is happy with his lot despite not being presented with a plethora of chances at the moment.

Pulis added: “Peter is fine, he worries about us winning. If you have a look at the goal Jon Walters scores at West Ham, the first person to him is Crouchy.

“That’s typical of what Peter is – he’s not an individual who worries about himself. He’s not one of those egotistical lads.

“There are some players who score a goal but they lose the game and they are absolutely delighted. You wouldn’t put Peter in that category.

"He’s been absolutely brilliant.”

While Stoke have been spluttering in front of goal, they have been rock solid at the back - only champions and league leaders Manchester City have a better defensive record.

Pulis added: “Hopefully we can rely on it for rest of season. We need to make sure we’re solid. We’ve played against five top teams so far and looked good. It’s something we want to maintain.”
