Chelsea's Free Run To Sign Demba Ba Stuns Tony Pulis

Tony Pulis is stunned that Manchester City and Arsenal failed to rival Chelsea for Demba Ba’s signature.

European champions Chelsea quickly snapped up the Newcastle hitman for £7million when this month's transfer window opened.

And, as he prepares to try to stop him on Saturday, Pulis is amazed they had a clear run at the powerful Senegal striker.

The Stoke boss knows all about Ba’s ability, as he was the first British boss to spot his potential.

He agreed a £6m fee to bring him to the Potters from Hoffenheim in January 2011, only for the striker’s dodgy knee to fail a medical.

Stoke pulled out of a deal and Ba went to West Ham, did enough to earn a switch to Newcastle and there netted enough goals to get Chelsea interested.

Pulis said: “He is a great signing for Chelsea, I’m surprised other big clubs didn’t go after him.

“He has everything. He can finish with right foot, and left foot; he is good in the air. He is strong.

“We saw enormous potential in him, and our view has certainly been vindicated.”

Ba has scored four goals against Stoke, including a hat-trick for Newcastle, since his move to the Britannia broke down.

Pulis said: “He has gone his way and we have gone ours.

"He’s had a great career - and we have done brilliantly as well.”
