Jose Enrique Feared Being Booted Out Of Liverpool

LiverpoolJose Enrique concedes that without the kick up the backside he received from Brendan Rodgers his Liverpool career would now be over.

Reds boss Rodgers singled out Spaniard Enrique and Stewart Downing for a shock public dressing down in September.

Frustrated at their attitude and lack of desire to win games, Rodgers openly talked about jettisoning the pair at the earliest opportunity.

Enrique, 26, was not happy at the way his boss went about grabbing his attention but admits it was the wake-up call he needed.

And now the left-back is starting to show the form that persuaded Liverpool to pay Newcastle £7m for his services at the start of last season.

He said: "When he said it I was angry, because he also said it to the press and that was not good for me.

"I don't think that is a good way to do things.

"But for me, it did help. I decided I had to train harder and have to improve or I won't figure here.

"I knew that if I did what he asked I would be able to play for him."

Enrique could have taken the stick to heart and sulked his way out of Anfield in a January move.

Instead he took it as a sign that Rodgers wanted him to recapture the form that made him a feared raider down the flanks during his time at Newcastle.

He added: "It gave me a lift though because it meant he was interested in me. If he told me these things it meant he wanted me to play for him.

"I took it in a good way and I did my best.

"That was how it should be and I am happy because the way the manager wants to play suits me.

"Growing up in Spain this is the way I have always played and the role I now have comes naturally to me."
